These six do different jobs, and using the wrong one is how disputes start. The short version, before you pick.
| Document | Use it when | Reach for something else if |

| Invoice | The work is done and you are asking to be paid, by a date. | The money is already in hand. That is a receipt. |
| Receipt | Payment has been made and the customer needs proof of it. | You are still waiting on the money. |
| Estimate | Something is genuinely unknown, so the figure may move. | You can see the whole job and want to commit to a price. |
| Quote | You are offering a fixed price and will stand behind it. | There is anything you cannot see yet, like work behind a wall. |
| Work order | A job is being dispatched and someone has to record what happened. | You are describing work to a customer before it is sold. |
| Service agreement | The relationship is ongoing, with a term, a price and a way out. | It is one job. A quote and an invoice cover that. |
The distinction that catches people most often is estimate against quote. An estimate is an approximation you can revise, and a quote is a fixed price you are bound to once it is accepted.
