We analyzed 7,481 local service businesses across 15 industries and 25 U.S. cities on Google Maps. Key findings

  • The average local service business has a 4.82-star Google rating across 7,481 businesses sampled.
  • The median business has 165 reviews, but 23% have 500+ and only 3.6% have fewer than 10.
  • Reviews needed to crack the top 3 range from about 74 (Pool Service) to 2,084 (HVAC).
  • HVAC and Plumbing are the most review-competitive trades; top-ranked firms there carry well over 1,000 reviews.

Is a 5-star rating realistic?

A high star rating is now the norm, not an edge: 76.6% of the businesses we sampled hold 4.8 stars or higher. Distribution of average ratings across all 7,481 businesses:

Takeaway: because nearly everyone clears 4.8 stars, rating alone will not move you up the map pack. Review count and recency are what differentiate the top 3.

What this means for business owners

A 4.8-star rating no longer sets you apart. Nearly everyone has one. What separates the businesses that win the Google Maps top 3 from everyone else is review volume and velocity. In the most competitive trades, the leaders have thousands of reviews and add new ones every week.

The practical takeaway: figure out the top-3 review count for your industry in your city (use the calculator above), then build a steady pipeline of review requests to close the gap. A business adding 5 to 10 reviews a week compounds faster than competitors who ask sporadically.

How to close the review gap

  • Ask right after the job. The moment work is finished and the customer is happy is the highest-yield time to request a review.
  • Text the link, do not rely on email. SMS open rates dwarf email, and a tappable link removes friction.
  • Make it one tap. Send the direct Google review link so customers do not have to search for your profile.
  • Respond to every review. Replying (to praise and complaints alike) signals an active business and builds trust.
  • Keep a steady cadence. Consistent review velocity matters more than occasional bursts.

Methodology

Top 20 Google Maps results for each of 15 service categories across 25 U.S. cities (375 searches).

For each industry we collected the top 20 Google Maps results in each of 25 cities (375 searches, 7,481 businesses with ratings). "Reviews to reach top 3" is the median review count of the top 3 ranked businesses per city, then the national median across cities. Ratings and review counts were captured in June 2026.

Caveats: reviews are one of several Google local-ranking factors (proximity, relevance, categories, and more also matter), so the top-3 figure is a competitive benchmark, not a guarantee. Frequently asked questions

How many Google reviews do I need to compete?+

It depends on your industry and city. Across our sample, the top-3 ranked businesses had a median of 74 reviews in the least competitive trade (Pool Service) up to 2,084 in the most competitive (HVAC). Use the calculator on this page to find the target for your exact industry and city.

What is a good Google rating for a local service business?+

A high rating is now table stakes: 76.6% of the 7,481 businesses we analyzed have 4.8 stars or higher, and the average rating is 4.82. Anything below about 4.5 stars stands out negatively. Because almost everyone has a strong rating, review volume is the bigger differentiator.

Do Google reviews affect local search ranking?+

Yes. Review count and recency are among Google's local ranking signals, alongside proximity, relevance, and business category. In our data, the businesses ranked in the top 3 of Google Maps consistently carry far more reviews than the median business in their market.

How many reviews do I need to rank #1 on Google Maps?+

There is no fixed number, because reviews are one of several ranking factors. As a benchmark, the median review count of the top-3 businesses in our sample ranged from 74 to 2,084 depending on the trade. To rank first you generally need to be at or above that top-3 level for your specific market.

Is it better to have more reviews or a higher rating?+

Both matter, but rating is largely saturated, 76.6% of businesses already sit at 4.8 stars or higher, so a steady stream of new reviews (volume and recency) is what separates the businesses that win the map pack from everyone else.

How often should I ask customers for reviews?+

Consistently. A business that adds 5 to 10 reviews per week compounds far faster than one that asks sporadically, and steady review velocity signals to Google that the business is active. Automating a review request after every completed job is the most reliable way to keep that cadence.

Which service industries are the most review-competitive?+

HVAC and Plumbing are the most review-competitive trades in our data, with top-ranked firms carrying well over 1,000 reviews. Pool Service is the least competitive, where the top 3 average around 74 reviews.

How was this data collected?+

We analyzed the top 20 Google Maps results for 15 service categories across 25 U.S. cities (375 searches, 7,481 businesses with ratings), captured in June 2026. See the full methodology below.
